Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools and Colleges Certificate (Online) Level 3
This course is appropriate for anyone wishing to undertake work in a school supporting teaching and learning. The role of a teaching assistant is underpinned by in-depth knowledge of child development, safeguarding, working with others and how the curriculum and schools as organisations can support teaching and learning.
The course is designed to take around one academic year but, as the knowledge elements are all achieved through our online learning platform, you are able to work at your own pace.

Course Details
- You must have a GCSE Grade 4(C) in Maths
- You must have a GCSE Grade 4(C) in English
- You will need to undertake an Enhanced DBS check and will need to be available for a placement in a school in year 1 or above (not reception) for two days a week to support your studies and to demonstrate skill competencies
How to keep children and young people safe through Safeguarding and Prevent
Legislation, policies and procedures underpinning your practice
How schools and the curriculum are structured to promote positive outcomes for children and young people
The role of others you may work with in and out of school to promote a child-centred approach
How to support children with additional needs and different backgrounds
How to understand behaviour and adopt approaches that help the child’s social and emotional development

Cathie originally worked as a Learning Support Assistant whilst completing her BA (Hons) in Working with Children and Young People before completing teaching qualifications. Whilst qualifying, she worked extensively with young people who had become disengaged with education. Later, she achieved an MEd in Professional Development with a focus on reflective practice and the use of technology in learning. Cathie now teaches across a range of programmes in the College from learning opportunities through to degree level, where she particularly enjoys supporting dissertations. Her experience as a Support Assistant means that she has good knowledge, strategies, and ideas to support students on the Teaching Assistant course.Cathie Burgess
