Social Science Certificate Level 1
Social Science is a fascinating subject area that studies society and how and why people do the things they do. Subjects such as Psychology, Criminology & Sociology are studied within social science, with topics including mental health, hate crime, homelessness, stereotyping & discrimination included in this course.
This level 1 course will provide students with an introduction to core topics within social science, providing them with the knowledge needed to progress to higher level study within this subject area. This course is the ideal starting point for students who wish to work in careers such as policing, social work, counselling, psychology, education and many more areas, in the future. Alongside lessons in social science, all learners will undertake personal development lessons which will support students with key skills such as employability skills, support with improved self-esteem, transferable skills, and many more. If not already obtained, students will be expected to retake their Maths and English GCSE’s alongside their Social Science course and this will be included as part of their timetable.
At South Devon College, we offer a full progression route in Social Science from level 1, level 2 and 3, and also progression to university study at our University Centre. University Centre South Devon offers a range of degrees including Psychology & Criminology, Psychology & Counselling and Education and Childhood Studies. Many of our college students have progressed from our level 3 social science course, onto our degrees.
Course Details
- 3 GCSES graded between 1-3 (G-D). Maths and English are not required. Students will be expected to retake their Maths and English alongside their course.

I have been really happy with the Level 4 Learning and Skills Mentor apprenticeship. The monthly lessons, led by Leigh, are well thought out and engaging. We receive excellent resources and have ample opportunities to practice our techniques during the lessons. Allowing for group collaboration and sharing of experiences. The feedback and one-on-one sessions I have received are informative, knowledgeable, and helpful, enabling me to develop my skills further. Since starting this apprenticeship, I have gained valuable knowledge in questioning and listening techniques, which I have already begun to apply in my role as an Assessor Coach. Throughout the program, I have felt fully supported. I cannot recommend this course enough for anyone either new to mentoring or looking to develop their communication and support skills.
