Seafish Stability for Experienced Fishers
This one-day course introduces the principles of vessel stability, why vessels float, the stability hazards that can make vessels unstable and the actions that need to be taken to keep a vessel stable and safe.
This course is for experienced fishers on any size of vessel and allows you to progress onto our Advanced Stability Awareness course.
The 16.5m Skipper’s Ticket requirement includes two one-day courses on stability, entitled Stability Awareness for Experienced Fishers and Advanced Stability Awareness. Fishers are required to complete both courses.
On completion of this course, you will understand:
The extent of the effects of poor vessel stability to deaths in the fishing industry
Stability hazards, risk, and the risk equation
How to mitigate against risk and the risk spectrum
Stability and the terms used to describe vessel stability
How external forces, the transverse movement of weight, the FSE and the up-ward movement of weights form stability hazards
How to minimise the risks associated with deck and below deck operations
How vessel watertight and weathertight integrity is maintained
How to monitor vessel stability using the Wolfson Guidance
How the application of the relevant Regulations, Codes of Practice and guidance helps maintain vessel stability
This certified course is being held at a local venue for practical assessment, as well as our Marine Academy on Dart Marina.

"I will really miss my college days and from the beginning the tutor, Al, has been so supportive. From someone who has not completed anything academic in over 20 years, this course was a step in the right direction for me. I have learnt so much from the group of people, different organisations, but mostly from Al who has a wealth of HR knowledge. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Al and she will always go out of her way to support and guide you in the right direction".
