Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) Apprenticeship Level 3
This Level 3 apprenticeship equips you with the skills and knowledge needed to work on all systems within modern light vehicles.
You may find employment with a dealership specialising in a particular manufacturer or at an independent garage servicing various makes and models.
As a Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician, your daily tasks will range from replacing straightforward parts to diagnosing and repairing complex faults using advanced diagnostic tools and equipment. Beyond technical expertise, you will also learn how a workshop operates commercially and develop essential customer service and communication skills.

Course Details
- You must have a GCSE Grade 4(C) in English
- You must have a GCSE Grade 4(C) in Maths
- You should have a genuine interest in this subject
The construction and operation of advanced electrical, braking and suspension systems, engine and transmission systems
Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to establish system serviceability
Industry recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults
Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge
Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer
How to develop positive working relationships and communicate effectively and how to carry out self-evaluation and improve own performance
Motor vehicle service and maintenance technicians work on all the systems found within the vehicle and solve complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment. The tasks faced are constantly evolving, driven by the introduction of ever more complex technologies and diagnostic techniques.
A motor vehicle service and maintenance technician must be able to work independently but also operate as an effective team member and have good customer handling skills. They will understand how vehicle service and repair is impacted by legislative, regulatory and ethical requirements, including health and safety law and environmental procedures. As part of this course, the apprentice will obtain a qualification that meets the EU’s 2014 F-gas regulation.
