Effective record-keeping is an essential component of zoo management, fulfilling not only regulatory requirements for zoo licensing but also serving as a crucial tool for informing animal husbandry, research, and welfare enhancement within zoos.
This course has been designed for individuals currently employed in or aspiring to join the zoo and aquarium field, this course offers an introduction to ZIMS. It encompasses essential topics such as zoo licensing, the historical significance of record-keeping practices, the various outputs derived from meticulous data management, and the practical utilization of ZIMS for both operational and research purposes.
Participants will engage hands-on with the ZIMS platform, learning to input crucial data such as animal accessioning details, weight records, feed information, and water quality data. Furthermore, participants will delve into real-world data sets, culminating in a small-scale research project aimed at highlighting the importance of this dataset.
