IMI Accreditation Light Vehicle Inspection Technician Level 3
IMI Accreditation is recognition of the current competence of professionals working in the Retail Motor Industry and their commitment to an ethical Code of Conduct.
It is governed by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), the professional association and Sector Skills Council for the Retail Motor Industry. The route content and structures are constantly reviewed to ensure that they remain current and support skills needs in the sector.
In order to achieve IMI Accreditation, you are required to pass a series of practical skills and knowledge modules. The Light Vehicle Inspection Technician route includes five practical assessments and two on-line knowledge assessments. You must agree to and abide by the IMI Code of Conduct. To maintain your accreditation and prove current competence, you should be reassessed every three years.

Careers and Employability:
The IMI Accreditation Light Vehicle Inspection Technician evidences knowledge, skills and behaviours of technicians operating at Level 3. This accreditation has a life span of 3 years and can be used as an entry pathway to the Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4 and 7) for technicians who have not previously achieved a qualification at Level 3.
This accreditation is also available as a package combined with the Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4 and 7).
Course Details
- You must be able to work unsupervised - ideally, they should be in full time employment with at least 3 years experience to ensure they are familiar with the techniques for vehicle servicing, inspection and system(s) diagnosis.
This one-day activity is purely assessment based and no formal teaching will take place.

I have been really happy with the Level 4 Learning and Skills Mentor apprenticeship. The monthly lessons, led by Leigh, are well thought out and engaging. We receive excellent resources and have ample opportunities to practice our techniques during the lessons. Allowing for group collaboration and sharing of experiences. The feedback and one-on-one sessions I have received are informative, knowledgeable, and helpful, enabling me to develop my skills further. Since starting this apprenticeship, I have gained valuable knowledge in questioning and listening techniques, which I have already begun to apply in my role as an Assessor Coach. Throughout the program, I have felt fully supported. I cannot recommend this course enough for anyone either new to mentoring or looking to develop their communication and support skills.
