ILM Effective Coaching and Mentoring Certificate Level 5
This qualification is for anyone with a specific responsibility for effective coaching and mentoring within an organisational context, or for a manager or team leader, wishing to incorporate coaching into their leadership style. It’s also ideal if you’re planning to move into a developmental role or start a career as a freelance coach or mentor. The course will provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to coach and / or mentor others.
To become an effective coach and/or mentor you will learn how to plan, deliver and review your own coaching and mentoring. The programme is designed to provide you with a range of coaching theories, models and techniques and the ability to apply them in practice. Practical skills sessions will take place in a supportive environment, enabling you to try out new techniques and reflect on your progress with the help of encouraging and constructive feedback.
How will I learn?
You will learn through a combination of taught sessions and practical activities, including practice coaching sessions. There will be regular tasks to complete enabling you to receive feedback on your progress. You will also learn through carrying out regular coaching sessions in the workplace, writing up summaries of each of these and reflecting on your own learning and development as a coach.
You’ll be assessed through one written assignment; a portfolio of coaching and /or mentoring from two/three clients, resulting in over 18 hours of practice; and a reflective journal / CPD plan.
Timetable Information
The course is delivered part-time over a period of approximately 42 weeks (termtime)
For the first three weeks you will attend College once a week 9am-4pm in college to immerse you in the initial skills requirement
Weeks 4 – 24 are fortnightly in college 9am-1:15pm, with the alternate weeks on line 9am-11am group or 11-1 by appointment
Weeks 24-42 are supported fortnightly online via small group support or 1-1 coaching supervision / tutorials taught over 12 months
Careers and Employability
An employee with this qualification will be able to:
Manage coaching relationship with the coaches and /or signposting to other services
Provide quality assurance and continued development of their own practice
Furthering the coaching culture in the organisation
Work with organisational management to embed coaching skills in future or current leadership
You may be an existing or future leader / manager able adopt a coach leadership style or alternatively potential job titles may include Business Coach, Career Coach, Coach, Coaching Practitioner, Coaching Professional, Leadership Coach, Performance Coach, Wellbeing Coach.
Progression from Level 5 Coach Apprenticeship could be to:
Professional body accreditation e.g. European Mentoring and Coaching Council EMCC
Coaching qualification at Level 7 e.g. ILM Certificate in Executive Coaching and Mentoring
Leadership qualifications e.g. CMI Level 7
A degree apprenticeship e.g. Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship
Master’s Degree or post-graduate certificate in coaching, or leadership and management
Course Details
- You will be required to have a telephone or personal interview with the tutor
- You will be required to complete a pre-course questionnaire to outline your range and level of academic qualifications and experience to demonstrate the relevance to this qualification
Knowledge to gain an understanding of the skills, principles and practice required for effective coaching or mentoring within an organisational context including:
Differences between coaching, mentoring, counselling and training
The organisational context of coaching including structure, culture and leadership
Coaching ethics and relevant legislation
Theories relating to communication skills, coaching models, tools and techniques
How to plan, deliver and review your own coaching and mentoring including:
Communication skills including questioning, listening, delivering and asking for feedback
Application of coaching models, techniques, and tools
Developing rapport to build coaching relationship and manage boundaries
Supporting clients to set clear goals and prioritise action plans
Reflecting on own coaching / mentoring to build self-awareness and develop own practice
Holistically review your ability to perform effectively as a coach or mentor within an organisational context, including:
Reviewing and reflecting on own learning and self- assessing own performance as a coach / mentor
Producing a SWOT and CPD plan to continue with own self development as a coach / mentor
