Environmental Science

Learners will be studying the AQA Environmental Science Syllabus. Studying Environmental Science enables students to gain a deep and well-informed insight into the environment, and the scientific processes that control and affect it. You will develop an understanding of how different events and cycles within the environment interrelate and how they influence subsequent environmental events. The human impacts on these events and cycles will be considered, with a focus on how science and technology are being used to minimise the problems caused. You will learn through a mixture of lectures, internet-based research and group activities, as well as on various offsite visits. In previous years, there have been opportunities to visit Berry Head Nature Reserve to undertake practical habitat management, the National Marine Aquarium to understand coral reef ecology, the South West Energy Centre to look at renewable energy and sustainable technology and a residential trip to Dorset to undertake ecological surveying. You will be required to participate fully in class discussions and activities and there will be opportunities to debate current environmental topics in lessons.
Topics include;
o Ecological processes and life support systems
o Methods of Conservation
o Past and future energy resources
o Climate change
o Ozone depletion
o Agricultural productivity and pollution
o Noise pollution
o Waste management and minimisation
o Fisheries and aquaculture
o Human population and sustainability
o Ecological footprints and biocapacity
o Coral reefs
o Antarctica
o Scientific research methods

What will I learn?

Studying A Level Law at South Devon College helped me decide what I wanted to do as a career, and therefore what I wanted to study at university. We benefited hugely from termly trips, and we even shadowed a judge, which gave me a huge insight into what my future career could entail. My teacher, Kay Harding, is excellent, and went above and beyond in helping me revise, improve exam technique and keep me up to date on current legal affairs. She was also great at giving me advice even outside of College time.Callum Priestley
