A Level Art and Design has been designed for a wide range of candidates and provides engaging and innovative learning experiences where art, craft and design practice is meaningfully integrated with theoretical knowledge and understanding.
It is particularly suitable for those who enjoy a wide range of art processes as you will be introduced to practical sessions in drawing, painting, print-making, 3D processes, textiles, photography and mixed media with many opportunities to experiment with new materials and processes to develop your learning of the subject.
This A level course is great for those Learners with a passion for exploring creative art methods. The A level works off themed starting points where individual personal projects are developed from. Learners are then be required to develop their projects through planning, experimentation, research, contextual references, written analysis and evaluation and evidence this in appropriate formats.
There are 2 key components to the course:
Component 1: Personal Investigation – A large practical coursework project with an extended written element – 60% of the A Level.
Component 2: External Assignment – Learners are to develop a personal project from one of the set themes – 40% of the A level.
This course provides learners with opportunities to develop a broad foundation of critical, practical and theoretical skills that offers learners a holistic understanding of a range of practices and contexts in the visual arts, crafts and design fields, culminating in greater specialism and achievement.

Studying A Level Law at South Devon College helped me decide what I wanted to do as a career, and therefore what I wanted to study at university. We benefited hugely from termly trips, and we even shadowed a judge, which gave me a huge insight into what my future career could entail. My teacher, Kay Harding, is excellent, and went above and beyond in helping me revise, improve exam technique and keep me up to date on current legal affairs. She was also great at giving me advice even outside of College time.Callum Priestley
