South Devon College is pleased to announce recent student participation with the Devon Youth Workforce Academy (DYWA). In the latest of extra curriculum opportunities available for South Devon College students.
Now in its fourth year of running, the DYWA was created with the goal to discover the best future coaches and sports officials nationally; with academy members gaining access to community events helping to further develop key skills.
Open to girls aged 15 – 17, academy members are given the autonomy and independence to create their own philosophies and thrive under the guidance of a young mentor. College students Skye Kelly, Jess Bickley and Olivia O’Connor recently joined the exciting programme which also helps put students in touch with local volunteering opportunities.
South Devon College Community Sport Operations Manager, Craig Hutcheson said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to develop their skills, confidence and supports them in becoming better coaches and leaders. The training days are ran by leading professionals within sports coaching, who work in partnership with South Devon College. I know the girls are really excited to be part of the programme and will work hard to attend the National Girls Active Coaches Camp, during Easter 2019. We will also support the students to run internal coaching sessions at South Devon College which will enable more girls to participate in physical activity”.
Devon Youth Workforce and South Devon College student Olivia O’Connor adds, “Jess, Skye and myself have all been chosen to join the Devon Youth Workforce. All being highly competitive sports players our experience was very beneficial, the programme is very informative of how we can become better leaders helping not just ourselves but others to become better sporting players. We’ve also gained so much more confidence in speaking to others and getting more people into sport. Our experience was not just an opportunity to learn but to also have fun”.
