17th October 2018

South Devon College is thrilled to announce that Level 3 Health and Social Care student Charlotte Heal, 17 from Torquay, has successfully gained entry to the WorldSkills UK final held this November at the Birmingham NEC Arena.

Charlotte’s story of success first started after gaining first place at the regional heats for Health and Social Care hosted at the South and City College Birmingham in May 2018. Scoring amongst the top 8 regional competitors at the heat, Charlotte was overjoyed with the result, gaining entry to the national finals later this year.

South Devon College Lecturer in Health and Care, Sally Freeman said, “Charlotte has worked extremely hard to train and study to increase her theoretical knowledge and practical skills to compete in this competition. She pushes herself outside of her comfort zone to compete in front of a panel of judges, and added to this there will be hundreds of spectators at the NEC in Birmingham in November. All the health and care team are very proud of her achievements so far, and wish her the very best of luck in the Worldskills UK Final in Health and Care.”

Upon completion of her course, Charlotte intend to progress her studies onto university to study Adult Nursing. When Charlotte is not busy with her studies, she also attends to her Health Care Assistant part time role caring the elderly.

WorldSkills UK is a partnership between businesses, education and Governments that help accelerates young people’s career, giving them the best start to work and life. The competitions are designed to deliver benefits to apprentices and students, but also to their employers, training providers and represented colleges.

Taking part in the competition equips entrants with the world-class skills needed to help organisations maintain their competitive edge. For colleges and independent training providers, participation provides a proven method in showcasing the talents of the next generation of students.

Established as part of the City and Guilds range of advanced technical extended diplomas, South Devon College Level 3 Health and Care is an engaging 2 year course, developing the skills students require to thrive in the Health and Social Care sector. Students on the course work towards gaining valuable transferable skills, preparing themselves for future opportunities, progressing onto vocationally specific degree pathways or achieving employment in the sector.
