The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA) is for professional managers who take lead responsibility for people, projects, operations and/or services to deliver long-term organisational success.
It is applicable to professional managers from all sectors, private, public or third sector, and all sizes of organisations. This apprenticeship has been designed to provide access to development opportunities for as wide a range of individuals as possible.
The course would be beneficial for those at the start of their career wishing to become professional managers and achieve Chartered Manager status, or those who have already developed practical experience but wish to develop their theoretical understanding of management skills further.
This apprenticeship has been developed by a group of employers, in partnership with a number of higher education institutions and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). Under this scheme, workers who complete the apprenticeship will achieve a BA (Hons) in Leadership and Management, and become a Chartered Manager.
University level qualifications at University Centre South Devon are rated GOLD by the Teaching Excellence Framework, a system for recognising excellent teaching and learning in higher education. In addition to this, students on the previous cohort recorded a satisfaction score of 100% for their studies on this programme.
You will require good literacy and IT skills

You must have achieved A Levels, a foundation degree, and/or a recognised management or leadership qualification at Level 5
To apply, you will need to demonstrate and evidence where you have taken responsibility to deliver long-term organisational success.
The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship is an exciting work-based route towards developing professionally competent Chartered Managers.
It includes three parts:
Work-based learning which means that the apprentice is in paid employment for the duration of their apprenticeship and receives on the job training and support
The completion of the BA (Hons) Leadership and Management at UCSD
Through both of the above, apprentices are able to acquire knowledge and skills, and prepare for the End Point Assessment, which has the assessment for Chartered Manager embedded
The degree will consist of 5 modules:
Leadership and Management Concepts: This module provides an overview of the role of leadership and management within organisations and the differences between the two concepts. The relationship to a range of processes at individual, team, organisational and national levels will be explored; adopting multiple perspectives and viewpoints
Operational Decision Making: Operational performance is imperative for continued success of organisations. This module looks at data management and effective decision making to support employee engagement and provide a motivational environment thus maximising effort.
Corporate Strategy in Action: This module draws from concepts of strategy in order to analyse real-world concepts, important for leadership and management decision making. It will explore both the theories and models of strategy, including the processes of developing a strategy, focussing on a range of analytical tools and their significance.
Digital Innovation:Successful organisations depend on their visionary approach, innovation, satisfying changing markets and ensuring future sustainability and success. The module will provide an understanding of how successful organisations make use of innovation and entrepreneurship to achieve strong market positions and sustainable and successful futures.
Extended Professional Practice:This module gives you the opportunity to work on a project that meets the needs of your organisation, enabling you to apply a wide range of knowledge, skills and behaviours into a project that will impact and have benefit to your organisation

Financial support and bursaries
Funding is available to help you with living costs during your studies via Student Finance England. We are committed to supporting our students with a number of bursary packages, which you will receive if you meet particular criteria, and does not need to be repaid. Bursaries are awarded in addition to any funding received from Student Finance England.
When studied part-time, the duration of the course depends on the speed at which you wish to progress through it. This is called the ‘intensity of study’. For example, studying half-time would be equivalent to 50 per cent intensity of study and would typically extend the length of the course from two to three years. As part-time study will mean attendance of some modules that are on the full-time timetable, it may mean that you will be required to attend modules timetabled over three days of the week. You may be able to change the intensity of study during your course. Not all intensities of study are available for all programmes.
Teaching
Our dedicated teaching teams will support with your application of theoretical and practical knowledge and will be invaluable to your development. Their passion and enthusiasm is exceptional, with dedicated support and tutorial time available so that you can make the most of your studies.
Teaching staff
You will be taught by an experienced teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes academic staff, professional practitioners with industry experience, and where relevant, technicians. Postgraduate students undertaking teacher training may also contribute to the teaching of seminars under the supervision of the module leader. Our teaching is informed by research, professional practice and industry experience to provide you with the most up to date and relevant learning opportunities.
Assessment
We recognise feedback as an essential component of your learning and progression. We adopt a feed-forward approach whereby feedback is given in a developmental manner to support your continued progression. You will receive feedback on all assessments within 20 working days.

Independent learning
When not attending lectures, seminars or practicals you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for examinations where applicable. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities, including the library, the Research Centre, and our course specific environments.
International students with UK settled status
Qualification and Language Requirements:
- International Qualifications: If you hold qualifications from outside the UK, these must be officially translated and verified through ECCTIS.
- English Language Proficiency: If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of proficiency by achieving an IELTS score of 6.8 or above.
