Youth Studies and Social Sciences

The Youth Studies, Childhood and Social Sciences Level 2/3 course is a 2 year programme designed for people who wish to work in youth clubs or in youth justice with young offenders or disengaged young people. You could also progress to teaching young people in Pupil Referral Units.

The programme covers theories of youth work, children’s language development and community campaigning and focuses on using activities to re-engage young people. You will have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities, working alongside members of the College staff team.

In the first year you will gain three youth work and childhood development qualifications which include: Level 2 certificate in youth and childhood studies, Level 3 award in community campaigning and the Level 3 award in teaching assisting.

In the second year you will gain the National Youth Agency’s nationally recognised level 3 diploma in youth work practice. Alternatively you can progress to the Social Science Level 3.

You will need maths or English at GCSE(4).

What will I learn?

“I’ve been involved in youth work for over 20 years, and my passion is just as strong as it was when I ran my first youth club. I love helping young people achieve their potential. Youth work is incredibly rewarding, and I love passing my enthusiasm and expertise on to students who, like me, wish to improve the lives of others.”Pete Boffey
