Working with Children, Young People and Families Apprenticeship (Higher Level) Level 4
The Working with Children, Young People and Families Level 4 programme has been designed to provide you with a broad knowledge and understanding in areas relevant to community and social care policy and practice.
As part of the course you will become skilled in recognising and assessing the complex needs children, young people and families often present and support with any specific interventions or referrals. During the programme you will develop an understanding of the importance of early intervention and safeguarding work, allowing you to manage risk across the spectrum needs for children, young people and families.The course focuses on workbased Learning and you are required to undertake a work placement to develop essential practical skills. Higher Level Apprentices will undertake 30 hours a week in employment, with an off the job commitment of 8 hours per week.
During your studies you will learn through a varied approach to teaching and learning, which includes seminar discussion and assessment, reflective video diaries, essays, reports and portfolios, all of which enhance your communication and presentation skills. All of our teaching team have a wealth of experience and maintain strong links with the industry. You will benefit from guest speakers, who will be able to share their experiences and provide you with a valuable insight into working practice.
This apprenticeship is comprised of a Level 4 Certificate in Higher Education, which allows for progression onto the second year of a related foundation degree or degree programme on completion. At University Centre South Devon (UCSD) you could progress onto the second year of the FdA Working with Children, Young People and Families programme, which allows progression to top-up Level 6 programmes in BA (Hons) Child Development and Education or BA (Hons) Education, Development and Society to complete your undergraduate studies.
You could also apply to transfer to study programmes at other universities. After you complete your studies your potential job roles include; social care practitioner, roles in pastoral care, youth work, psychology-focused careers, as a trainer or facilitator, or in family support work, family homes, youth centres, early years, youth justice, children’s centres, educational settings and the community.
- You must have a GCSE Grade 4(C) in Maths
- You must have a GCSE Grade 4(C) in English
- You must have completed an appropriate vocational qualification at Level 3

Assessment and intervention
You will understand the importance of and be skilled in, early intervention and safeguarding work. You will manage risk across the spectrum needs for children, young people and families'. You may work in settings as diverse as family homes, youth centres, early years, youth justice, children's centres, educational settings and the community. You will play a significant role in working across agencies to improve outcomes. You may work with particular age groups, across the full age range or specifically with families. By supporting the confidence and skills of children, young people and families you will help them to overcome barriers and maximise their independence.
Duration: Typically 24 months for new entrants. For those with relevant qualifications and experience in the health and social care field, 12 to 18 months
I am an Early Years Teacher who joined the team at South Devon College after 11 years working in the industry. Previously, I was a deputy SENDCo and the Speech, Language and Communication Lead within early years practice for many years. I am passionate about passing on my knowledge and experience to new students and supporting you to achieve your goals.
