Social Sciences and Education

This course is suitable for those who have a passion for understanding human behaviour, with a particular focus on children and young people, and for those who aspire to progress onto university. The course is comprised of three qualifications: Level 3 Extended Certificate in Psychology, Level 3 Diploma in Criminology and GCE Childcare and Education.

The course balances theoretical and practical study, giving you the tools to succeed in this rewarding sector. Some of the units that you will study will include psychological theory, crime scene assessment, criminological theory and educational policy. This course would suit individuals who are interested in pursuing careers in Teaching, Social Work, Speech and Language Therapy, Counselling, Educational Psychology, Marketing, Psychology, Youth Offending and many other careers.

You will be based in College for study three days a week and attend a placement on a fourth day, where you will apply your knowledge of theories relating to child development and educational practice.

Upon completion of this programme you could consider progressing onto Higher Education either at South Devon College or at an External University. This qualification provides the equivalent UCAS points of 3 A levels.

Please note: you will need an appropriate DBS check prior to starting the course.

Within the criminology section of this course, you will study the following units: Changing Awareness of Crime, Criminological Theories, Crime Scene to Courtroom and Crime and Punishment.

Within the psychology section of this course, you will study the following units: Psychological Approaches and Applications, Conducting Psychological Research, Health Psychology and an Introduction to Psychopathology (Mental Health).

Within the education section of this course, you will study the following units: The Role of the Early Years, Childcare and Education Practitioner, Human Development from Conception to 19 Years, Key Legislation, Policy and Procedures, Statutory Educational Frameworks and Play and Learning.

What will I learn?

Katy has worked in secondary schools (private and public), further education (FE) and higher education (HE) environments and is qualified with a PGCE in Secondary Physical Education, QTS and QTLS. She holds a Master’s in Education and is studying for her Professional Doctorate in Education with a specialism in outdoor education. She has taught for over 10 years and developed and managed FE and HE programmes with a wide range of experience teaching across a large range of levels.
