This course is aimed at beginner level and will introduce you to the basics of silver jewellery making from the design stage through to the finished product. You will design and make a silver ring, set with a cabochon stone and a textured ring band, using traditional metal-smithing techniques. The course content will include health & safety tips; measuring; cutting; choosing stones; shaping and forming; soldering; bezel-making; polishing and setting. You will learn how to use various silver jewellery making tools such as saws, drills, hammers and a gas torch. Designing a project will also be covered as well as planning and anticipating costs. The techniques covered can be applied to other jewellery making projects, so the course is an excellent introduction to silver jewellery making in general. The aim of this course is to help you make a ring you can be proud of and enjoy, and to provide you with the skills necessary to make similar things without supervision.

"Having progressed from a Level 3 course in Games and Interactive Media at South Devon College, I knew that there were excellent facilities and levels of support. The fact that UCSD is local also meant I would save money by staying at home, which was really beneficial. The support of the tutors has helped me transition into university-level study, which has been very positive. I contributed to an employment and research scholarship, where we secured an Oculus Rift display, which I'll be using to simulate and test some of the 3D spaces I've created. When I complete my studies at UCSD I will go on to complete a top-up year, before entering employment. At the moment I'm planning on working as either a graphic designer or in 3D modelling using the skills I've learnt during my studies."Jack Gladman
