The Advanced Apprenticeship for Science Technicians is for people working or hoping to work in a science laboratory. The Apprenticeship Standard will take two years to complete. In the first year, the apprentice will attend the University Technical College in Newton Abbot for one day per week. During this day, the apprentice study towards a BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science, learning advanced practical laboratory technician skills, theory and practice plus improving their maths and English ability.
In employment, the apprentice will learn skills on-the-job, supported to work towards specific competence targets relating to health and safety, laboratory housekeeping, scientific methods, analysing data and complying with relevant regulations. The apprentice will also undertake an IOSH Working Safely Certificate.
The apprenticeship will be assessed by an external organisation at the end of the two years.
Once completed, graduates go on to work as qualified science technicians in commercial laboratories, research, schools and universities. Alternatively they may choose to progress to a Higher Apprenticeship for Laboratory Scientists or onto a science-related degree.
"Studying at the University Centre South Devon also means a greater and more personal level of support from tutors, which really helps. The animal unit at UCSD is fantastic, and enables you to gain a lot of relevant experience."Eisha Miah
