This course explores the craft of mosaics using various tesserae; glass tiles, china, beads and other small objects. You will create different usable and decorative pieces of work with the help of your tutor. You will make at least three different pieces of work suitable to decorate your home or give as gifts and shown how to finish them off at home using grouting techniques. The course is based around the idea of recycling and we will look at unusual objects that can be re-used as containers or bases for mosaics.
The course is suitable for those who have completed a previous mosaic course or have a little mosaic experience. However complete beginners can also be accommodated. You will be shown basic techniques and encouraged to produce simple designs to start with.
You will explore different woods, glues and surfaces that are suitable to mosaic pieces on and what types of tessarae (tiles) can be used. You will learn the safe use of tools and how to cut and place your tessarae securely to your surface. You will learn how colours, textures and tile direction can enhance your pieces of work. You will be given ideas and shown samples of the items that will be made during the course. See handout for exactly what you will be making.
The tutor will demonstrate designs and show how samples were made. You will have a handout at the start of the course with a list of items that are needed each week, all of which are available to purchase at the class. You will then produce your own piece of work during the lesson and the tutor will be on hand for help and advice. You will be given feedback during and after each lesson. A peer/self/tutor evaluation session at the end of each class will enable you to share good ideas with other learners. You will have the opportunity to get in touch with the tutor between lessons to ask questions or advice and order materials.

"Having progressed from a Level 3 course in Games and Interactive Media at South Devon College, I knew that there were excellent facilities and levels of support. The fact that UCSD is local also meant I would save money by staying at home, which was really beneficial. The support of the tutors has helped me transition into university-level study, which has been very positive. I contributed to an employment and research scholarship, where we secured an Oculus Rift display, which I'll be using to simulate and test some of the 3D spaces I've created. When I complete my studies at UCSD I will go on to complete a top-up year, before entering employment. At the moment I'm planning on working as either a graphic designer or in 3D modelling using the skills I've learnt during my studies."Jack Gladman
