This course explores the craft of mosaics using various tesserae, glass tiles, china, stone and other small objects. You will create different usable or decorative pieces of work with the help of your tutor. You will make several different pieces of work suitable to decorate your home or give as gifts and shown how to finish them off at home using grouting techniques. The items made will be on the theme of Nature. Suitable for those who have completed a previous Mosaic course or have a little mosaic experience. However complete beginners can also be accommodated. They will be shown basic techniques and encouraged to produce simple designs to start with.
You will explore different woods, glues and surfaces that are suitable to mosaic indoor and outdoor pieces on and what types of tessarae (tiles) can be used. You will learn the safe use of tools and how to cut and place your tessarae securely to your surface. You will learn how colours, textures and tile direction can enhance your pieces of work.

"Having progressed from a Level 3 course in Games and Interactive Media at South Devon College, I knew that there were excellent facilities and levels of support. The fact that UCSD is local also meant I would save money by staying at home, which was really beneficial. The support of the tutors has helped me transition into university-level study, which has been very positive. I contributed to an employment and research scholarship, where we secured an Oculus Rift display, which I'll be using to simulate and test some of the 3D spaces I've created. When I complete my studies at UCSD I will go on to complete a top-up year, before entering employment. At the moment I'm planning on working as either a graphic designer or in 3D modelling using the skills I've learnt during my studies."Jack Gladman
