The Higher Apprenticeship is designed “to provide the manufacturing and
engineering sectors with high grade technicians and engineers who have
practical skills, combined with a higher education qualification.” (SEMTA
2016). It is for engineers who are at, or aspire to be senior level and are
working towards “Incorporated Engineer” or equivalent status. They should
be taking responsibility for people, projects, operations and/or services to
deliver long term organisational success, with the expectation that they
will deliver impact, behave ethically and demonstrate their commitment to
continual learning and development.
With a comprehensive structure, the higher apprenticeship programme will
allow you to develop higher level skills and competencies needed to be an
effective leader and engineer. This qualification will provide the underpinning
requirement to achieve Engineering Technician status and work towards
Incorporated Engineer. The qualification has multiple pathways and can be
studied with a Mechanical or Electrical/electronic focus.
My time at South Devon College really helped me excel and realise my potential in the construction industry. There are more options and career paths in construction than I first thought. I started as a carpentry apprentice and I am now training with my employer to become a Site Manager. It's a great industry to get into offering huge variety, and we have a lot of fun along the way too.Ricky Collyer
