Helping Skills

This course is suitable if you would like to enhance your personal listening and responding skills, whether at work or in a personal capacity. The qualification gives you the opportunity to develop the skills needed to communicate effectively, and to engage in a one-to-one helping relationship appropriately. You will consider the variety of contexts and settings in which helping skills can be used, for example within coaching and mentoring, social care, youth and community work, early years and counselling.

The course is classroom based and each session runs for 3 hours each week for 13 weeks. You will also need to allow time for research, reading and writing at home. You will create a portfolio for your work which will be assessed by the tutor.

"I initially studied at University Centre South Devon before progressing to Plymouth University to study the BA (Hons) History degree. I was awarded a first class honours degree, as well as receiving a prize for my efforts at the graduation ceremony. I have everyone at University Centre South Devon and Plymouth University to thank for their encouragement. Without that support I would not have been able to achieve what I did, and making the decision to return to education has definitely been a positive one because of this. As a mature student, it's an honour to be considered a success story, and I'm pleased to represent those institutions and encourage others to make the same decision."Barry Musk
