This programme has been accredited by the Royal Society of Biology following an independent and rigorous assessment. Accredited foundation degree programmes contain a solid academic foundation in biological knowledge and key skills, and prepare graduates to address the needs of employers. The accreditation criteria require evidence that graduates from accredited programmes meet defined sets of learning outcomes, including subject knowledge, technical ability and transferable skills.
This foundation degree is the perfect preparation for a career in the rapidly evolving and expanding life sciences sector, which continues to be a growth area in both the UK and the EU. As the Government continues to invest in this sector, intending the UK to become a global hub for life sciences, there have never been more opportunities for graduates in this field to excel.
You will receive dedicated support from our experienced teaching team, and be working in our finest laboratories. The course considers both the theory and practice linked to a range of study and job areas in the biosciences sector, preparing you either for further specialist study or progression into employment upon completion. The curriculum has been designed to develop you into a well-rounded and skilled practitioner, focusing not just on the theoretical knowledge you will require, but also necessary skills such as laboratory management and health and safety.
The course has a strong focus on employability, and you will be encouraged and supported in gaining work experience with an employer in South Devon. During this time you may support day-to-day operations, or be involved in project work. This experience will help you identify the area of biosciences that interests you most, develop your practical, research and communication skills, and also increase your employability by securing a vocational reference and building strong links in the local industry.
Level 4 (Year 1 for full-time students) develops the underpinning knowledge and principles associated with the core concepts of biology including cell biology, microbiology, genetics, evolution and biochemistry as well as a strong focus on the development of your practical laboratory skills.
Level 5 (Year 2 for full-time students) introduces new topics such as immunology and human physiology whilst further deepening your understanding of cells and their adaptations, molecular genetics and biotechnology and evolution and biodiversity. Your researching, practical and analytical skills will also be developed by carrying out a research project.
The full-time and part-time course has one start point in September.
This course focuses on both practical and theoretical study, with dedicated time in our well-equipped laboratories. You will develop into an independent learner with extensive research skills, preparing you for a career in biosciences. We will help you in identifying and securing work experience with a suitable employer during your first year of study. This should amount to approximately 80 hours in total. Some employers may offer you the opportunity to work with them for a longer period of time, particularly if you are involved in project work. Many of our students consider the work experience to be one of the most valuable aspects of this course, as they gain vocational skills in a real working environment, enabling them to apply the theoretical knowledge they have learnt. Some students secure employment through their work experience, and a good report or reference will significantly strengthen your CV and future prospects. In the second year of study, you will again focus on a mixture of theoretical and practical work, augmented by extensive individual reading and research. You will complete your own research project, which will include practical work and literature reviews. This will form a strong basis for your dissertation should you progress to the final year of an associated top-up degree, but will also help develop you into a confident, independent practitioner with the skills necessary to succeed. You will study six modules at Level 4 and six modules at Level 5. All modules are core to the programme and are worth 20 credits. The approximate percentage of the course assessed by coursework and test is as follows: Year 1 - 66% Coursework and 33% Test Year 2 - 70% Coursework and 30% Test Timetables are normally available one month before the commencement of your studies. As a guide, in 2017/18 the first year of this programme was timetabled on: Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday.

You could also apply to other relevant biological degrees, or degrees at other institutions. Some of our past students have gone on to study PhDs across the country. Please note that there is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability. Alternatively, you will be able to immediately enter employment in the growing biosciences sector. Government investment in industry means that employment opportunities continue to grow, with skilled graduates in high demand. Areas targeted for development include medical genetics, genomics, proteomics, cell therapy, biopharmaceuticals and many more. Opportunities in more traditional disciplines also continue to grow, with positions available in fields such as haematology, histology, microbiology and toxicology, which could see you working in hospital and veterinary laboratories. You could also find employment in nutrition and food production, environmental monitoring or even Government research.
"Whilst studying the FdSc Biosciences degree I gained a huge array of skills, including lab techniques, and study and research skills, as well as the skills necessary to review scientific papers efficiently. I was also able to fit managing my online business around my studies, which was really important to me."Roxanne Dunbar
