Biology A Level
Your Biology A Level lessons will include lectures, practical sessions, group work, and discussion. There will also be opportunities to take the classroom outside on field excursions, including ecological sampling and surveying in nearby woodland and on the seashore.
The two-year course will cover both animal and plant-based topics.
First year topics covered include aspects of cell structure and function, biological molecules, transport systems in animals and plants, disease and immunity, biodiversity, classification and evolution.
Following your grounding in the key biological themes the second year aims to extend your knowledge and application of biology covering topics such as nervous and hormonal communication, photosynthesis, respiration, genetics, manipulating genomes, cloning and biotechnology, ecosystems, populations and sustainability. Not only will the course allow you to link key biological ideas, it will also develop a number of transferable skills including investigative skills, problem solving, and research, mathematical and analytical skills.
A Level Biology provides an excellent base for a university degree in healthcare, such as medicine, veterinary or dentistry, as well as the biological sciences. he practical topics set by the exam board will allow you to gain a Certificate of Practical Competence, which will support your degree application or an application for employment in the science sector.
Course Details
- You must have a GCSE Grade 5(B) in Maths
- You must have a GCSE Grade 4(C) in English
- You must have 5 GCSEs at Grade 4(C) or above
- Additionally, Grade 6 in Biology, Grade 5/6 in Combined Science.
