This foundation degree is a practical exploration of the applied arts, where you will have the opportunity to develop diverse creative skills within drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, print, design, digital and mixed media arts. You will be guided through the generation of ideas, concepts and issues in art and how to communicate meaning visually. You will be encouraged to explore a broad range of processes and workshops underpinned by a strong and individual understanding of concept and context in art.
During this course you will produce a wide-ranging body of work, which will evidence your professional capabilities and prepare you for employment. Using the skills you have
developed, you will have the opportunity to create high-quality personal and individual work.
The course has a strong focus on employability, and ensures that you gain the essential skills required to work in the arts. You will be encouraged to work independently, and by exploring the arts industry locally and nationally, you will have a broad range of career opportunities when you graduate.
Each module is worth a specified number of credits: you take a combination of compulsory (and, if available, optional modules) enabling you to cover key subject knowledge while developing your own interests. For full-time students a total of 120 credits will be studied in each academic year. In the majority of cases this will consist of six modules. For part-time students it will depend on the intensity of your studies.

"Having progressed from a Level 3 course in Games and Interactive Media at South Devon College, I knew that there were excellent facilities and levels of support. The fact that UCSD is local also meant I would save money by staying at home, which was really beneficial. The support of the tutors has helped me transition into university-level study, which has been very positive. I contributed to an employment and research scholarship, where we secured an Oculus Rift display, which I'll be using to simulate and test some of the 3D spaces I've created. When I complete my studies at UCSD I will go on to complete a top-up year, before entering employment. At the moment I'm planning on working as either a graphic designer or in 3D modelling using the skills I've learnt during my studies."Jack Gladman
