The University Centre at South Devon College is the newest addition to the Vantage Point Campus. It provides all University Level students with an outstanding learning environment which is fully equipped with current technologies and is Wi-Fi enabled across the building, allowing for easy internet access anywhere. We are proud and excited by the University Centre and it is a showcase for higher level skills provision across the region.
The four storey building houses social space, lecture rooms and 2 Cafes – on the top floor, with 360° glass and stunning views of Dartmoor and Torbay, is Oscars. Whilst on the ground floor there is Wilde’s, a great place to meet fellow students and grab a coffee on the sofas!
The University Centre allows you as a student to access both the Research Centre, located on the first floor and the Ideas Lab which is on the ground floor. Both of which are fully equipped with computers for study and you can also use laptops and your own equipment (such as laptops, smartphones, tablets and ipads) to connect to the free wireless network throughout the building.
The Ideas Lab boasts IT facilities and teaching space and is a superb facility to develop links with local businesses, through the Business Advantage Innovation Team based there. This can be through student projects or development of business ideas that may occur through your programme. The Research Centre has been designated a quiet zone for further research and study activities. This is a further IT and LRC resource available for use.
The College’s ‘green agenda’ has been prominent in the design and build, which has lead to photovoltaic and solar panels as well as, rainwater collection to ease water use. All of this contributed to the University Centre achieving an “Excellent” rating in its BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method), which is widely used for all new builds.
University Centre Technology
The new University Centre is fully equipped with a range of technologies to support individual and group learning ranging from touch-screen computers to lecture recording facilities. Lecture and seminar rooms are equipped with digital projection, audio, touchscreen computers and interactive whiteboards. Large lecture rooms also feature multiple screens for a range of information to be presented plus the ability to record lectures for future use.
A wall of screens welcomes you as you enter the building providing you with a range of information from locations of lectures, support available, videos, plus details of events and other useful information. Live timetabling is shown through screens outside each room and plasma screens provide relevant information throughout the building.
