We have become a licensed provider for The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme 2009 saw yet another milestone for the College in the successful application for our own Independent Operating Authority Licence to offer the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. We are now an independent body, able to provide the DofE within the College. This is a notable achievement of which we are very proud. With our own in-house DofE Operations Manager, we can support DofE at all levels.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was launched in the United Kingdom in 1956 by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and since then has given more than six million young people from over 130 countries the chance to set and achieve personal goals, and to learn about themselves and their community. The Award is a programme of leisure-time activities available to all young people between the ages of 14 and 25. It provides a journey of personal discovery - an adventure challenging the whole individual, regardless of gender, colour, creed or ability.

The programme is designed to encourage personal discovery, self-reliance, commitment, responsibility and service to the community. There are 3 separate attainment levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold; each with 4 sections, Service, Skill, Physical Recreation, and Expedition. HRH Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex, who last year visited South Devon College, is also a Trustee of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. The operating licence means that South Devon College can now offer the popular Duke of Edinburgh Award programme to its learners, and is able to offer and support the Duke of Edinburgh Award independently.

Helen Carby, Duke of Edinburgh Award Operations Officer for the South West, said of South Devon College’s new licence,
“We are delighted to be working with South Devon College and give young people in South Devon another great opportunity to work toward a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The College team and I are very excited about this budding partnership and look forward to seeing many more young people taking part in the DofE in the future.”
