What are apprenticeships?
Apprentices are employed full time and work towards nationally recognised qualifications whilst learning at work and in college.
An apprenticeship is based on a learning framework which is designed by national organisations and must be followed by apprentices, employers and learning providers like colleges. Most types of apprenticeship offered at South Devon College mean that you would come to college on day release basis. Some are block release, where you come in for several days at a time.
You need a full time job to be an apprentice. This means at least 30 hours per week including your college time. If you do not have a job yet, the college can help you to find one but you may need to do some job-hunting yourself and will need a CV and attend interviews with employers. The college will help you with this too.
If you have a job already, your employer may be willing to consider letting you train for an apprenticeship as it is a recognised route to good national qualifications.
You need to be over 16 to be an apprentice but there is no longer a maximum age limit.
All apprenticeship frameworks have technical knowledge components, which are examined, and practical competence components, which are assessed in the workplace by a college assessor. If you do not have recent GCSEs at Grade C or above in English and Maths you will need to do Key Skills (or Functional Skills) at college with our tutors. You may need to do IT too if it is a requirement of the framework you are on.
Different apprenticeship frameworks take a different length of time to complete, some could take about a year and others up to four years. There are several levels of apprenticeships and the entry criteria are different for each level.
Intermediate Apprenticeships. This is at Level 2. Most of our frameworks are offered at this level.
Advanced Apprenticeship. At Level 3 this is broadly the equivalent of A levels. Most of our frameworks are offered at this level.
Higher Apprenticeships. These are at Level 4 and are offered in a few subjects at South Devon College.
The following link will take you through to the National Apprenticeship website, which should help to answer your general questions about being an apprentice.
