SOUTH DEVON COLLEGE is celebrating national recognition in the world’s largest vocational skills competition, WORLDSKILLS UK.
Last month the College were selected to host South West regional competition heats in both health & social care and beauty therapy, welcoming the best beauty therapists and health & social care workers in the South West to their Paignton campus.
Since then two college learners have been awarded winners medals in their heats and a member of teaching staff has been selected to be a judge at the World Skills final at the NEC Birmingham in November.
Level 2 Beauty Therapy student Sammie-Jo Callaghan, 18, from Paignton, won her Intermediate Beauty Therapy Worldskills heat, and Foundation Degree Healthcare Practice student Rameez Shah, 22 from Paignton won his heat in the World Skills Regional Health and Social Care Competition. Health and Social Care lecturer Sally Freeman was also selected to be a judge at the World Skills final. Both students are set to compete in November’s national final, where Sally will be judging.
“We were delighted to host the South West heat of such a prestigious competition; and for it to be such a success.” said College Health and Social Care lecturer Sally Freeman, “It’s an honour to welcome the best of the best to compete at the college and to be asked to judge at the finals is a very proud moment for me. Now I also get the opportunity to be joined in the final by one of our own students – Rameez. He should be very proud of his performance and we wish him the best of luck in November. ”
“It was a pleasure for South Devon College to host - for the first time ever - the South West heats for Beauty Therapy, and to have one of our students win was fantastic!” said Lynda Blackmore, Section Head for Hair, Beauty and Complementary Therapies at the College, “These competitions provide an excellent opportunity for individuals to compete with competitors from other organisations and publicly showcase their skills. We are very proud that Sammie-Jo will be flying the flag for South Devon College and the South West at the national competition.”
South Devon College offer a wide variety of beauty therapy courses in both Paignton and their new facilities in Newton Abbot. They also offer a wide range of health and social care courses, from level 1 right up to university level with the Foundation Degree in Healthcare Practice.
