Sports do not build character. They reveal it. A first for the South Devon College and for many of the players a competitive rugby match all be it a friendly under floodlights. This added to a match which already had a sense of occasion about it, with it being the first local derby against a School within the Torbay area, and a decent crowd of parents, staff and pupils attending.
A strong coastal wind was going to challenge the players throughout the match and this was evident from the beginning with both teams struggling to put many passing moves together. Torquay had the majority of the early possession and moved the ball well however the SDC's offencive defence continually enforced errors amongst the Torquay backs. However a couple of strong runs from the Torquay pack enabled them to get on the front foot , SDC had now stopped advancing in defence and Torquay were now keeping ball well and gaining territory. This spell of possession ended in the games first score with Torquay scoring a try 0 - 5 conversion missed.
A more sensible approach to play saw SDC get back in the match, the forwards took the ball on continuously with great running from the pack and centres this gave the half backs a better platform to use the wind and put some intelligent kicks in. However, it was a kick put down the touchline by fullback Daniel Foale that resulted in SDC first try, a bobbling kick put pressure on the Torquay covering defence the ball bounced loose and it was great support play from SDC winger Damien Thomson that saw him pounce on the ball and score a try, Mac Lewis converted 7 - 5.
SDC finished the first half the stronger keeping the ball in the opposition 22 for long periods, eventually the pressure told and SDC were awarded a penalty Mac Lewis once again converted scoreline at the end of the first half 10 - 5.
SDC made 5 changes for the second half and along with having the wind against started poorly, Torquay also started extremely well in the second half and within minutes had crossed the line for their second try 10 - 10 conversion missed.
Torquay gained momentum from the score and entered into a spell of dominance with the Grammar number 9 begin at the forefront of their play. Torquay continued to play in the SDC 22 and although the Colleges defence held strong Torquay were awarded and converted two penalties in quick succession. 10 - 16.
With time running out SDC were forced into running the ball with Sam Poustie taking a couple of quick taps from penalties on the half way line this found SDC in the opposing 22. From here SDC kept the ball for 3 or 4 minutes continuously threatening the Grammar try line this resulted in desperate measures from the Torquay side who were deemed to give away penalty after penalty. After several infringements the Referee took the brave and correct decision to award a penalty try to SDC. Mac Lewis then had the task of converting the try with the last kick of the match in order to secure the victory, he Cooly stepped up and converted. His coolness probably due to the fact he was unaware of the score and the importance of the kick!

Wednesday 16th November British Colleges Sport Netball SW Division 2 Yeovil College 8 South Devon College 11 South Devon travelled to Yeovil College looking for their first win of the season, having come up against elite academy teams thus far. Some heavy defeats have resulted in the team having to dig deep, on paper this looked like a competitive fixture which could go either way, a positive attitude and good effort levels would be required to come away with a result. Under the captaincy of second year sports student Sapphire Hendriksen (GD) Devon were marshalled well, Hendriksen’s leadership skills coming to the fore, with first time player Catherine Harvey (WD) proving a valuable asset to the team and ably supported by Sam walker (C), Charlotte Clark (WA), Lucy Hales (GS). Devon started well and in an even first quarter the game was in the balance at 3 – 3, half time remained the same with both teams cancelling each other out to leave the score at 5 – 5, Antonia Cord (GA) was a constant threat to the Yeovil goal and Devon started to get on top in the game with aggressive defence and good passing, Chantelle Bull (GK), Kelly Legge (GA) and Tasha Partridge (S) all contributed to the team’s performance, Devon started to take control of the game and with Hales scoring goals they increased their lead to run out 11 – 8 winners, with Hales, Cord & Legge amongst the scorers. Coach Harper was delighted with the team’s efforts and performance and challenged them to show the same levels week in and week out.

Wednesday 16th November British Colleges Sport Football NCFL Elite League Cornwall College 2 South Devon College 2 A game played in torrential rain with lots of goal mouth action at both ends ended in what was probably a fair result. Both sets of players can feel proud in the way they approached the game and the sportsmanlike manner in which it was played in difficult conditions. South Devon started the game well having lots of possession and creating problems for the Cornwall rearguard. Ryan Frayne and Aaron Walker continued in the same vane as they finished last week’s game, by harassing the Cornwall defenders and not allowing them to settle. While SDCs reshuffled defence, Warren and Routledge playing in the absence of Last and White, defended resolutely against a physically strong Cornwall side. In challenging conditions, South Devon passed the ball well and created several half chances for Challinor, Frayne and Walker. Cornwall responded in kind and tested Spriggs in the away goal, who rose to the challenge and made a couple of good saves. Frayne was rewarded for his perseverance when he chased a through ball and managed to get a touch (so he said) ahead of the Cornwall defender to guide the ball into the net to give SDC the lead. Cornwall responded by piling on the pressure and were unlucky not to level the scores, through part luck and part good defending.
More of the same was delivered in the second half, as chances went begging at both ends. Cornwall’s left winger was causing problems for SDC and seemed to be involved in all of the home sides best moves, just as it was looking as if Cornwall would equalise, Sean Summers broke down the SDCs left side and demonstrated excellent ball skills to weave his way into the home box to finish with an exquisite shot into the near side of the goal. With ten minutes left, Cornwall were piling on the pressure and as a result were leaving gaps at the back. Challinor took advantage of this and had a one on one opportunity to finish the game off, only to fire his shot at the Cornwall keeper. This seemed to galvanise the home side and in a frantic finish to the game Cornwall managed to score twice, once from a through ball and the equaliser from a free kick from the SDC right hand side. Although SDC can be disappointed not to have finished the game off and come away with the win, they can all be proud of the way they played.

Wednesday 16th November Devon Schools League Paignton Community & Sports College 0 South Devon College 6 A great team performance with some good possession and excellent finishing, with Jamie Meaden scoring 5 and Liam Northcott adding the other. Against a weak Paignton side, Devon had the majority of possession and found chances easy to come by. Perhaps more pleasing was the clean sheet with Rory Killen Clark in goal for his first start of the season marshalling his defence well and Sammy Brown at Centre Back commanding, with Meaden showing his class up front Paignton's defence could not cope with Devon’s attacking play Overall a good win, but sterner tests lie ahead.

Wednesday 16th November British Colleges Sport Basketball SW Division 1 Cornwall College 37 South Devon College 64 The team continued their winning streak with a scrappy win over a weak Cornwall College team. Having said that we played some good basketball at times and addressed some of the issues from the last game against Truro.
Jake Westlake opened the scoring with Tristan Hall and Sam Flanders dominating the 1st qrt. with 8 points each and James Noble scoring 6 to finish 19-6. 2nd qrt saw much the same with some aggressive defence from the team to keep Cornwall away from the basket, keeping them to 5 points and James Russell getting on the score board with 6 points for the qrt.
half time score 38-11.
The game was over at half time and it was a case of maintaining the discipline Sam Flanders showed his improvement continues each game and managed to score 18 points and dominated the boards with his rebounding. Caleb Hutchins played some aggressive 'D' and I am very pleased with his ability to improve each game he finished with 8 pts also.
We have a game this Friday and we want to improve on this performance, without England star Jordon Cully (injured) the team need to prove that we are not a one player team and players need to take the opportunity to show me what they can do given the opportunity. Tristan Hall is certainly leading the team well and has relished the chance to lead from the front top scoring with 22 points with sam Flanders 18 and Caleb Hutchins, James Noble and James Russell all scoring 8 points. Well done guys turn up Friday with your game heads on

Friday 18th November England Basketball Schools U19 League South Devon College 62 Exmouth College 34 South Devon maintained their unbeaten start to the season stretching the sequence to 6 games, playing in the England Basketball U19 schools competition against local team Exmouth Community College, Devon were again without Jordan Culley due to injury and with Cameron Caton & Matt Cheeseworth also missing the squad was somewhat diminished, in the early stages the game was close with both teams missing chances and possession squandered. Only Tristan Hall & Caleb Hutchins for Devon were making an impact on the scoreboard, The first quarter was a case of missed chances and finished in the balance, the second quarter followed the same path, Flanders began to dominate at the boards but was guilty of giving up possession too easily, whilst Noble picked up some valuable points. At the break the score was still close, but in the second half Devon began to take control and extended their lead, Hall, Flanders & Hutchins all scoring well, with Russell making an impact from the bench. A good start to this competition, but the need to retain possession will become more apparent against stronger teams.
