For when the one great scorer comes,

to write against your name,

He marks not that you won or lost,

But how you played the game

……kick off approaches, coach’s instructions fresh in the mind; time to dispel all doubts and rise to the challenge, be it pitch or court, fair weather or foul. Cross the line, look your opponent in the eyes…this is your battle, your arena, your game, close your eyes….visualise… deep breath…whistle blows, now is the time……….

A very pleasing turn out for the South Devon College Rugby Academy having a full squad of 22 which included 4 players getting their first games for the team David Hogan, Daniel Foale, Mitchell Matthews and Josh......  Truro College 3s unfortunately could only muster a squad of 14 due to their other rugby squads playing the same afternoon.  After a discussion with the Truro coaches it was agreed that SDC would rotate their front row allowing one prop to play for Truro for a period of time giving them a full team and for the fixture to go ahead, therefore Liam Milton played the first half in the green colours of Truro.

Although overcast the match started in dry conditions with Truro starting more promisingly keeping hold of the ball for several phases, the SDC defence held firm and for the first 10 min allowed Truro no change from their possession.  The SDC defence was vastly improved from their previous outing with the players working tirelessly and not missing many tackles.  This pressure from Truro did pay dividends with them putting the first points on the board via a penalty this score rallied SDC into a period of attacking play which saw some strong direct running from the forwards and good decision making from the backs.  However, as the weather deteriorated SDC continued to try and offload the ball in contact which lead to knock ons in the wet conditions, this continually allowed Truro to regain possession an make their way into the SDC half where they were awarded another penalty which was converted to make the score 6-0.

SDC then begun to play the conditions much better with the half backs kicking the ball and finding space and playing Rugby in the Truro half this allowed the pack to apply pressure in the scrum and lineout.  During this period SDC scored their first points via a strong pick from the base of the scrum from number 8 Levin Veale, Mac Lewis was unable to convert.  Both teams continued to play positive rugby but began to struggle to keep the ball for many phases due to conditions and strong defence.  SDC found themselves back in the Truro 22 and continued to get close to a score with strong running from the forwards with Mickey Rowlands being held up over the line, eventually from the ensuing scrum SDC scored a carbon copy of the first try with a pick from the base from Levin Veale, the conversion was narrowly missed, 10- 6.

SDC found themselves in a good position with the end of the first half looming, however, just before the break the Truro fullback latched onto a loose ball in his own half and managed to avoid several attempted tackles to score a fantastic try in the corner, halftime score 10-11.

Both teams in the second half had their fair share of the ball but it was SDC who started more promisingly a flood of changes initially boosted the home side and the fresh legs aided a period of pressure in the Truro 22.  After a few probing runs from the SDC centres the forwards took the ball on with Liam Milton, who had now changed back to his familiar colours leading the way.  Big Liam used his bulk and strength to crash over the line and dot down a try his first for the college and SDC's third of the day, another narrowly missed conversion followed leaving the scores 15-11.

This score rallied the Truro team putting huge pressure on the SDC XV defence which held firm, with some tremendous tackling close to their own line SDC relaxed thinking they had kept the Cornish team at bay but alias some strong powerful running led to the visitor’s next try, score 15-16.  Both teams had opportunities to score late on but it was Truro who finished the stronger team and would have scored at the death if not for some ferocious defence by SDC to hold them up over the line.

British Colleges Sport Basketball SW Performance League

South Devon College 96 Truro College 48

Basketball TeamDevon continued their winning run at the start of the season with a comfortable win against a traditionally strong basketball college, a good all round team showing complimented by exceptional individual performances. Devon opened up with a strong first quarter to lead 25 – 9, with a closely contested second quarter leaving the score 42 – 25 at the half time break. Culley and Flanders were proving too strong for the Truro side to contain ably supported by Tristan Hall. After the break Devon reasserted their superiority and stretched their lead, eventually taking the second half by 56 – 21 showing both good offense and defence particularly by Jake Westlake and as a team playing the zone defence to restrict the home side to only 8 points in the last quarter. Top scorers on the day were Jordan Culley with 53, Sam Flanders with 22 and Tristan Hall with 12.

British Colleges Sport Football NCFL Elite National Cup R2

Truro College 1 South Devon College 3

Football 1st X1South Devon College progressed to the National Colleges League cup 2rd round, with a convincing win against Truro College. Due to adverse weather conditions the game was played on Truro’s 4G all weather pitch. South Devon started the game brightly and carved up several chances early on. Ryan Frayne and Aaron Walker set the tone up front by harassing the Truro defence and giving them no time on the ball. Frayne opened the scoring when a through ball by Sean Summers opened up the Truro defence and Frayne coolly slotted the ball home. In what was an open game Truro had their chances, but an outstanding overall performance by James s Spriggs kept the home side out. South Devon passed the ball well and benefitted from being a little more direct than in previous games allowing the Truro defence to be put on the back foot and make mistakes in their defending third. SDCs second goal was scored by George Yates who finished off a four man move in midfield which finished with Yates heading into the Truro goal from 12 yards out. Half time came with SDC two goals ahead. The second half continued as the first half finished, with both sides attacking well, causing both defences to work tirelessly throughout. Truro pulled a goal back when an extended period of pressure allowed Crane to finish from twelve yards out with a low driven shot through a crowd of bodies. Warren came on for Brown to nullify Crane, who was causing havoc down SDCs left wing. This change stifled Truro’s threat and allowed SDC to create several chances. Due to fantastic saves by the Truro keeper and the thickness of the Truro goalposts, the third SDC goal seemed destined not to come, until George Yates decided to try his luck from thirty yards, the resulting power driver, flew into the right hand top corner and sealed an impressive win for the away team.

British Colleges Sport Basketball National Cup R2

Truro College 57 South Devon College 59

Devon were playing Truro for the second time in a week and after winning easily in the league game could be forgiven for thinking this would be an easy ride into the 3rd round in the cup. Any such notions were quickly dispelled with Truro starting strongly and taking the game to Devon, in a game of fluctuating fortunes the result would go right down to the wire. Truro took a 14 – 10 early lead and extended this to a 26 – 10 margin, before Devon started to make inroads into Truros defence. Coach Hatchels’ time out and some no doubt choice words kick starting the Devon charge ably led by Hall & Flanders who scored the points in an unanswered run of 14 points to bring Devon back within 4. After allowing Truro to stretch their lead again Devon had to respond and with James Russell hitting some big 3 point scores the game was in the balance. With time outs being used and both coaches hugging the side line shouting instructions it was a case of which team would hold their nerve. With seconds remaining only 2 points separated the teams, Truro had chances at the free throw line, Whilst Russell took his chance in the same situation, a good steal by Flanders ran the clock down to give Devon their 4th win on the bounce and with it progression to the next round of the cup.

A Final score line of 8-5 to Weston College reflected what was a close and exciting match played in challenging conditions.  Luckily the strong wind coming off the coast had died down just before kickoff but the rain continued for the majority of the match, testing the player’s skill levels.

With both teams playing slightly tighter than usual the contact area was bound to be a competitive affair all afternoon and it was, with competition at the breakdown and first up tackling being impressive on both sides.  Weston got the first points on the board after gaining territory into the SDC 22 they took a lineout 5 metres out and drove the ball over the line, 5 - 0 conversion missed.

SDC rallied and begun to play rugby in the oppositions half but unfortunately would turn the ball over at vital stages. An injury to winger Damien Thompson meant SDC were forced into making a change at this stage with Joshua Opokua coming on.  The first half was relentless with both teams keeping the ball for long periods then losing the ball in contact the game flowed well without many stoppages, first half finished 5 - 0.

SDC begun the second period promisingly with strong running from Joshua Opokua, David Hogan and the back row.  SDC managed to keep the ball for some phases and after spotting space down the blindside Daniel Foale crashed over the line to even up the game 5 - 5 conversion missed.

This didn’t last long as a few minutes later a penalty was awarded to Weston after a SDC forward was deemed to come off his feet at the breakdown, Weston converted the penalty score line 5 - 8.

Weston gained confidence from this and strung some impressive plays together seeing their winger beat some defenders and only be denied the score after a fantastic try saving tackle from Adam Murch who had covered from the opposite wing.  From this point on it was all SDC who showed great handling in the conditions and strung impressive phases together a feature of this was the outstanding SDC lineout with Tom Page and Dan Alberici having towering displays.

SDC kept the ball in the opposition for the majority of the last 10 minutes and could have scored on numerous occasions however the ball either didn’t go to hand or they were held short of the line.  The final whistle was blown and the game finished 5 - 8, SDC were out the cup but a fantastic effort by all and a continued improvement from the previous week.
