Courses

STIHL GB, SKANSKA and CITB's Cskills Awards have joined forces to develop a new training programme and accompanying video to promote the safe use of petrol driven cut-off saws in the construction industry.

This course will cover all aspects of how to use a petrol driven cut-off saw safely and will include everything from selecting and fitting PPE, operating the machine and re-fuelling through to safe transportation. Successful completion of this course will enable operatives to use petrol driven cut-off saws safely.

The Brickwork Level 2 Diploma is designed to develop and expand upon existing knowledge of the trade, and can act as a progression from the Level 1 Diploma.

During this course you will learn more advanced techniques, including masonry structures such as large cavity walls and timber frame cladding. In addition to this, you will learn about solid walling and develop your skills in building Flemish and English bonds.

Upon completion you will be able to consider employment in the construction industry, or progress to the Level 3 Diploma to refine your skills further.

The Carpentry and Joinery Level 1 Diploma is a varied and exciting introduction into carpentry and the construction environment.

You will hit the ground running with various practical tasks that will improve your basic hand skills, and you will participate and run your own building project during off-site community work that develops teamwork and employability skills.

To apply for a CSCS card you must have the appropriate construction related qualifications and training and, in most cases, you must pass the CITB Health Safety and Environment Test within the previous two years. Exemptions to this requirement are listed below.

Aim of the test is to examine knowledge across a wide range of topics to improve safety and productivity on site. It is usually taken as a PC-based touch screen test. Apart from the exemptions described below, everyone applying for a CSCS card must pass the appropriate health safety and environment test.
If you have achieved a construction related NVQ or SVQ within the last two years and are applying for a CSCS card for the occupation the NVQ or SVQ relates to, you may not have to pass a CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test.

The Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry has been developed for delivery in a training environment and has been designed to: - further develop the skills and knowledge of people, enabling them to work at an advanced level in the industry in their chosen craft. - prepare learners to take higher-level qualifications to enable them to qualify as team-leaders and managers within the construction industry.
Upon successful completion of the qualification, you can seek employment with the knowledge and skills you have developed. Funding

We have a wide variety of financial support available for adults to fund your studies, as well as a dedicated finance team to help make studying with us affordable.

If you are aged 19 or over, and studying a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 course, you could apply for an Advanced Learner Loan. The Advanced Learner Loan is a government-funded loan to help learners. It's easy to apply for, doesn't take your household income into account and doesn't involve a credit check.

We can also support you with a Learner Support Fund, which can assist with costs including childcare, college meals, exam fees and course materials. The amount of funding you can receive depends on your personal circumstances, and you could be entitled to free tuition if you're studying a Level 2 course. In the event that you do have to pay a course fee, this can be managed in an affordable way through our direct debit scheme, with monthly payments starting at just £25.

Are you an adult looking for an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a great way of gaining important skills and qualifications with work-based training. You'll also receive a wage whilst you study, which makes apprenticeship training a fantastic option for adults preparing for employment.

You can start an apprenticeship even if you are already employed, or the College can help you secure an employer in a relevant field. They develop real work experience, and you gain both technical and academic skills with 4 days per week spent in the workplace and the remaining day in College.


Progress onto university with South Devon College

We also have an extensive degree programme, delivered in partnership with Plymouth University, so when you complete your studies you could progress to a related university degree that will develop the knowledge you need to excel.

If you don't feel quite ready for university study, our Access to Higher Education Diplomas can help you prepare, so there's nothing to stop you from achieving your goals. We have courses in a number of subject areas, as well as support with interview techniques and UCAS applications to other institutions.
