Barbering

Over the past 5 years Barbering has increased in popularity and barber's shops are experiencing a revival in male grooming. Men have become more concerned than ever about their appearance.
These days men, as much as women, are being judged by their looks and are under constant pressure to keep a youthful image. Men of all ages are consulting with their local barber to be inspired and be given a new style to compete with television and film celebrities.
A generation ago, being interested in hair would have been seen as an unmanly profession to pursue. Fortunately times and attitudes have changed and barbering has become fashionable with male and female of all ages. Barbering is not just about cutting hair but styling and designing too. It is a trade that will never be replaced by machines or computers and has earned renewed respect as a recognised career path.

The evening Barbering course gives opportunities to develop clipper as well as scissor cutting techniques that are used every day in the Barbering profession. Students will also cover the trimming and shaping of beards.
The course offers a mix of practical and theory sessions delivered by a qualified and experienced barber. The emphasis is towards practical development and theory sessions to develop the skills required for employment.
Once you have reached a suitable standard you will work on clients; ideally male friends and family members, then members of the general public booked through our dedicated reception staff.
As a Barber the highest standards of personal presentation are required. This is more than neat uniform, make-up and hair. It is about developing communication skills and personal mannerisms that inspire client confidence in the barber.

Funding

We have a wide variety of financial support available for adults to fund your studies, as well as a dedicated finance team to help make studying with us affordable.

If you are aged 19 or over, and studying a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 course, you could apply for an Advanced Learner Loan. The Advanced Learner Loan is a government-funded loan to help learners. It's easy to apply for, doesn't take your household income into account and doesn't involve a credit check.

We can also support you with a Learner Support Fund, which can assist with costs including childcare, college meals, exam fees and course materials. The amount of funding you can receive depends on your personal circumstances, and you could be entitled to free tuition if you're studying a Level 2 course. In the event that you do have to pay a course fee, this can be managed in an affordable way through our direct debit scheme, with monthly payments starting at just £25.

Find out more about the funding you could receive, here.

Are you an adult looking for an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a great way of gaining important skills and qualifications with work-based training. You'll also receive a wage whilst you study, which makes apprenticeship training a fantastic option for adults preparing for employment.

You can start an apprenticeship even if you are already employed, or the College can help you secure an employer in a relevant field. They develop real work experience, and you gain both technical and academic skills with 4 days per week spent in the workplace and the remaining day in College.

Progress onto university with South Devon College

We also have an extensive degree programme, delivered in partnership with Plymouth University, so when you complete your studies you could progress to a related university degree that will develop the knowledge you need to excel.

If you don't feel quite ready for university study, our Access to Higher Education Diplomas can help you prepare, so there's nothing to stop you from achieving your goals. We have courses in a number of subject areas, as well as support with interview techniques and UCAS applications to other institutions.
