Animal Studies

Here at South Devon College, our popular Animal Studies courses can open up career opportunities you may never have considered before, from animal handling and management, to veterinary care and dog grooming. We have exceptional facilities, and house over 150 species of animals, including meerkats, pigs, insects, lizards, monkeys and rabbits, ensuring that you get a varied and practical learning experience.

Depending on the course you choose, you will study various topics during your time here, gaining expertise in animal handling, health, biology, husbandry, conservation and much more, preparing you for employment in a range of jobs and roles such as veterinary nursing, dog grooming or working in wildlife parks and rescue centres.

We also enjoy strong links with local employers, such as Paignton Zoo, which gives you the opportunity to participate in work experience placements that will develop your vocational skills and knowledge. We also have trips throughout the year to supplement your learning and increase your understanding of the available careers in the industry.

As well as the qualifications listed below, we also have a Foundation Degree in Animal Science and a Bachelor's Degree in Applied Animal Science, enabling you to study at a university level and develop specialist technical knowledge. This means that whatever your goals are, you can achieve them with us!

Courses

This fun course is for people who have already undertaken the Basic Dog Grooming Certificate or who have experience in grooming different dogs. This is a practical course, taught by a highly qualified and experienced dog groomer, using our specialist dog grooming facilities (Creations Dog Grooming Salon) at South Devon College. You will be working with real dogs and you may get wet or hair on you; comfy, closed shoes are essential, and you will learn some advanced grooming and clipping techniques. You will have the opportunity to bring your own dogs in to practice on, but you must discuss this with the teacher first. There are no formal entry requirements for the course but we do suggest that you complete the Basic course first unless you are very experienced at bathing and grooming dogs. After completion you may wish to progress to our Level 2 and Level 3 accredited qualifications.
