Animal Studies

Here at South Devon College, our popular Animal Studies courses can open up career opportunities you may never have considered before, from animal handling and management, to veterinary care and dog grooming. We have exceptional facilities, and house over 150 species of animals, including meerkats, pigs, insects, lizards, monkeys and rabbits, ensuring that you get a varied and practical learning experience.

Depending on the course you choose, you will study various topics during your time here, gaining expertise in animal handling, health, biology, husbandry, conservation and much more, preparing you for employment in a range of jobs and roles such as veterinary nursing, dog grooming or working in wildlife parks and rescue centres.

We also enjoy strong links with local employers, such as Paignton Zoo, which gives you the opportunity to participate in work experience placements that will develop your vocational skills and knowledge. We also have trips throughout the year to supplement your learning and increase your understanding of the available careers in the industry.

As well as the qualifications listed below, we also have a Foundation Degree in Animal Science and a Bachelor's Degree in Applied Animal Science, enabling you to study at a university level and develop specialist technical knowledge. This means that whatever your goals are, you can achieve them with us!


Courses

This fun course is for people who have already undertaken the Basic Dog Grooming Certificate or who have experience in grooming different dogs. This is a practical course, taught by a highly qualified and experienced dog groomer, using our specialist dog grooming facilities (Creations Dog Grooming Salon) at South Devon College. You will be working with real dogs and you may get wet or hair on you; comfy, closed shoes are essential, and you will learn some advanced grooming and clipping techniques. You will have the opportunity to bring your own dogs in to practice on, but you must discuss this with the teacher first. There are no formal entry requirements for the course but we do suggest that you complete the Basic course first unless you are very experienced at bathing and grooming dogs. After completion you may wish to progress to our Level 2 and Level 3 accredited qualifications.

This is a full-time course that lasts for one year. The course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the animal care industry, as well as the high level practical skills required to excel in the sector. You will study units such as Animal Health, Biology, Handling, Feeding, Accommodation, Zoo Husbandry, Wildlife Rehab, Exotics and Livestock. You will need 4 GCSE grade Cs or above (or equivalent), plus level 2 English and Maths. You will work with animals on our well-equipped animal unit. The qualification is assessed by coursework. You will need to undertake a work-placement which we will support with. On successful completion of the first year you can progress to the Extended Diploma or possibly our Animal Science Degrees. You will also be qualified to work with animals in a variety of careers such as rescue centres,

This is a short-course designed to give an introduction into the management of animals. The course is designed for people who wish to work in the animal management industry or who would like to progress to further learning/training in a related area. You will have a mixture of practical and theory sessions on the course. Practical sessions are taught on our excellent Animal Unit, where we house over 100 different species of animals, or in our well-equipped laboratories. You will also have an afternoon at Paignton Zoo where you will be taught in our purpose built classroom by a qualified zoo keeper. You will also have access to online resources to support your assignment work.

This is a fun course that teaches you the basics required to bath and groom common dog breeds. You will cover health and safety, bathing, grooming set up and techniques to groom your dog for health, comfort and appearance. This course is mainly aimed at pet owners who would like to learn how to groom their own pet dogs. The course is taught by a highly qualified and experienced dog groomer. It is delivered in a very practical way, using our specialist facilities. Be prepared to get wet! Comfy, enclosed shoes are essential. There are no formal entry requirements for the course. This course is designed for people who would like to learn how to administer potentially life-saving basic first aid to their pet dogs or dogs they are working with. The course would be ideal for people working in animal rescue centres or dog grooming salons. You will be taught how to recognise the need for first aid in dogs, some of the problems that can lead to a pet requiring first aid and techniques to administer basic first aid to them such as resuscitation, bandaging and wound dressing. There are no formal entry requirements for this course; you can book on the online shop. You may complete some practical work outside so we advise that you bring outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear with you. The course will be a mixture of practical and theory activities in our specialist facilities.

This is an accredited course for people who are interested in working in the area of Dog Grooming. This Level 2 course provides a good general introduction to a range of areas in Dog Grooming. It is suitable for students who have little or no prior knowledge or working in the dog grooming industry and want to learn the skills you need to work under supervision in a dog grooming salon. You will cover trimming and styling, bathing, transporting animals, health and safety and basic business information such as reception duties and handling payments. You will have practical sessions led by a highly qualified and experienced dog groomer in our specialist facilities. You need to spend an additional 3-4 hours a week in independent study. You will need 4 GCSEs grade D and above or equivalent. You could progress to Level 3 Dog Grooming on completion or into employment.

This is an accredited course for people who are interested in Dog Grooming professionally. This Level 3 course enables students to develop their skills in a variety of areas in grooming and clipping. It is suitable for students who have already undertaken the Level 2 Dog Grooming Assistants qualification or who have good experience in professional dog grooming. This course develops the practical skills you need to work as a dog groomer or stylist. You will cover dog styling and finishing. This is the first part of the City and Guilds Level 3 in Dog Grooming. Delivery methods are very practical, you will work in our specialist facilities. You will also complete a written portfolio. You need to spend an additional 4-5 hours a week in independent study. You will need a personal kit, details will be given. On completion you could progress to part 2 or employment.

You will study units such as Coastal Management, Fisheries, Wildlife Populations, Water Quality, Organism Identification, Tourism and Recreation and Ecological Concepts and Application. You will need 4 GCSE grade Cs or above (or equivalent), plus level 2 English and Maths. The qualification is assessed by coursework. You will need to undertake a work-placement which we will support with. On successful completion of the first year you may be able to progress to our Marine Science Foundation Degree. You will also be qualified to seek work in the marine sector.

The Level 3 Certificate in Marine Biology and Ecology is designed for people who have a genuine interest in the Marine Environment and who already have GCSEs at grade C in at least 3 subjects.

You will study 3 marine based units of the City and Guilds Countryside Management qualification to gain a Certificate. The Certificate can earn you up to 70 UCAS points and upon completion you could progress to our Diploma in Marine Biology and Ecology or if you have at least 140 UCAS points, onto our Foundation Degree in Marine Science.

This part-time qualification is ideal if you are or would like to work or volunteer in a veterinary environment to gain knowledge and skills and a recognised qualification. You will complete units in; basic animal nursing, parasitology and zoonosis, restraint techniques, anatomy and physiology and reception skills . Within these units you will cover first aid, health and hygiene, infection control, monitoring and basic nursing skills. This course can help you progress towards a career as a Vet Nurse or care assistant. No formal qualifications are needed but you must be able to communicate well, both in writing and verbally. You will work in our specialist facilities and be taught by a expert staff experienced in Vet Nursing.

Funding

We have a wide variety of financial support available for adults to fund your studies, as well as a dedicated finance team to help make studying with us affordable.

If you are aged 19 or over, and studying a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 course, you could apply for an Advanced Learner Loan. The Advanced Learner Loan is a government-funded loan to help learners. It's easy to apply for, doesn't take your household income into account and doesn't involve a credit check.

We can also support you with a Learner Support Fund, which can assist with costs including childcare, college meals, exam fees and course materials. The amount of funding you can receive depends on your personal circumstances, and you could be entitled to free tuition if you're studying a Level 2 course. In the event that you do have to pay a course fee, this can be managed in an affordable way through our direct debit scheme, with monthly payments starting at just £25.

Are you an adult looking for an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a great way of gaining important skills and qualifications with work-based training. You'll also receive a wage whilst you study, which makes apprenticeship training a fantastic option for adults preparing for employment.

You can start an apprenticeship even if you are already employed, or the College can help you secure an employer in a relevant field. They develop real work experience, and you gain both technical and academic skills with 4 days per week spent in the workplace and the remaining day in College.


Progress onto university with South Devon College

We also have an extensive degree programme, delivered in partnership with Plymouth University, so when you complete your studies you could progress to a related university degree that will develop the knowledge you need to excel.

If you don't feel quite ready for university study, our Access to Higher Education Diplomas can help you prepare, so there's nothing to stop you from achieving your goals. We have courses in a number of subject areas, as well as support with interview techniques and UCAS applications to other institutions.
