Daniel, (20) from Kingsteignton, is an Advanced Plumbing Apprentice, who is employed by Tor Homes. His citation at the ceremony gave the reasons why he was chosen as the winner of the award: “Daniel has been an exemplary student throughout his four year programme at South Devon College. He has maintained 100% attendance and handed in all of his assignments on time. Daniel achieved excellent exam results by working with the College team who supported him through to completion. Daniel then progressed to the Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 Gas (Domestic). He flew through the remaining two year programme, again with excellent results in both his theory and practical portfolio.

Daniel has been an exceptional apprentice throughout his 4 year programme, not only completing as an early achiever but has been an inspiration to others and an asset to the class”.

Daniel is delighted to win the award.

“I knew I was up for the Plumbing award but getting the Apprenticeship of the Year award came as a shock – I didn’t expect it at all.  I’ve always enjoyed College, and had good reviews from people at College and at work;  I can’t fault the support I received throughout my apprenticeship.  The last four years have been very happy.”

Stephen Criddle, Principal of South Devon College, said

“We are delighted with the achievements of our apprentices, and the support they have received from their employers. Our apprenticeship programme goes from strength to strength, and the compliments we received at the event from both apprentices and employers confirmed the effectiveness and quality of our programme.”

The event was enjoyed by parents, friends and family who filled the Great Hall with the level of support recently experienced by athletes at the London Olympics.

In 2011/12 there were 685 apprentices and 404 employers actively engaged on the Apprenticeship programme with South Devon College. The College’s Apprenticeship provision remains one of the best in the country, and in 2011/12 the success rate was 85%, an impressive achievement for all concerned and very good news for our local economy. Over 30 Apprenticeship frameworks are now offered by the College and more are coming on stream all the time.
