Adult & Community Learning in Torquay have entered a giant pair of yellow sunglasses into this years Art Trail, where sculptures are on display along Teignmouth sea front and at the Ness Hotel in Shaldon throughout the summer.
The piece is made, almost completely, of recycled materials, including two old windows discarded from the demolition of the old Torquay Community College. It was created by the Stepping Out Arts & Craft class, a programme designed specifically for adult learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The inspiration came from a classroom discussion about looking out at the world around us, observing the beauty of our planet and enjoying the nature and the environment, particularly here in Devon. The project also reflects the concerns we all have for our environment and the view through the glasses captures the world as we would want it to be for future generations. The class is taught by Janet Ventre and Maxine McIntosh and the sculpture was put together by the schools caretaker Paul Fraser. Take a stroll around Teignmouth and view these fascinating works of art for yourself, they have been produced by various local community groups and artists and are all designed around current political and environmental concerns.
