ACE sales barrow brings in £200

Thanks to a donation from the Brixham Town Council the ACE Trustees were able to purchase a barrow to sell the vegetables and plants raised in their gardens at Brixham College. ACE is a charity that supports physically disabled people enabling them to attend adult education classes alongside able bodied people.

The initial ACE garden has bloomed and been extended with a polytunnel donated by the Co-op. More recently the area adjacent to the new disabled parking bays has been reshaped to create a mound that will become a Devon bank planted with fruit trees and meadow flowers. In front are the wooden raised beds to be used for growing vegetables. These have already been very prolific with onions, broad beans, peas, lettuce, and beetroot grown and sold on the new sales barrow.

The Thursday group had a BBQ last week and used the produce for their salad lunch. Flowers and vegetables were on sale after the musical interlude from the ACE Music class conducted by tutor Mick Stokes. £70 was made on this occasion and with ongoing plant and vegetable sales over £200 has been raised to aid the sustainability of the garden.

Tutor, Katie Babbs, is keen to encourage more able bodied people to get actively involved in this project helping plant, grow, water, weed and maintain the garden Garden project participants will be able to take home items for their garden and will be encouraged to bring plants and cuttings to the centre.

Volunteers are needed to support the ACE Friday gardening class where most of the work gets done. Katie Babbs will be teaching gardening classes on Wednesday mornings in September and these sessions will help participants understand the theory behind the practical work.

ACE is a charity run by and for disabled people offering educational opportunities at Brixham Adult and Community Learning. For further details of how to join or support this project contact Yvonne Ramos on:
