ACE visit to Slimbridge

Thanks to a donation from the Torbay Disabled Fellowship 28 physically disabled people were able to visit Slimbridge last month.

The group were transported in four people carriers by RS Taxis and enjoyed a refreshment break on the journey at Sanders Garden World, Burnham on Sea, who provided wheelchairs to aid mobility.

Slimbridge were able to offer both wheelchairs and mobility scooters and the group were met by volunteers who helped them down the ramps to the restaurant for lunch before exploring the site.

Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust consist of 325 hectares and is now fully accessible to all with level paths around the lakes. Many birds were very tame and would feed from your hand which ACE members enjoyed. One group managed to get out onto the marshes to visit the Kingfishers hide and see Lapwings wheeling over the fields near the Severn Estuary.

The highlight of the day was watching feeding time when there was a cacophony of noise and over 30 different species of water birds feeding. The group also saw Peter Scott's home and studio overlooking the wild fowl lake.
