Colleges new training facility in Newton Abbot
SOUTH DEVON COLLEGE have expanded their Newton Abbot based South Devon Skills Academy at Pearl Assurance House with a new hairdressing and beauty therapy section.
The current provision at Pearl Assurance House, in Newton Abbot town centre, focuses on educational programmes designed to give young people not in education, employment or training (NEETs) the skills and support to progress on to College, get into work, or gain an apprenticeship. Facilities already include purpose-built painting and decorating, IT resources and a life skills area - chosen by the students themselves to help develop their skills and prepare them for their next step and healthy independent living.
The new hairdressing and beauty therapy provision has seen half of Pearl Assurance House’s first floor transformed into one hairdressing and one beauty therapy training salon, complete with teaching rooms, IT facilities, toilets and a reception area. Courses taught at the facility include hairdressing levels 1 & 2 and beauty therapy levels 1 & 2, in full-time, part-time and evening course formats and the College are also hoping to branch into apprenticeships in the future. South Devon College Hair and Beauty Section Head Lynda Blackmore was quick to sing its praises:
“The new facility is very impressive and should significantly increase the range of top quality training available locally in the Newton Abbot and Teignbridge areas,” said Ms Blackmore, “We are very excited to begin teaching there.”
Following the success of the Skills Academy, South Devon College are also opening a new training centre created on nearby Bradley Lane with dedicated automotive engineering and motorcycle maintenance courses as well as sustainable construction provision including brickwork, painting and decorating, plastering and carpentry multi skills. Short courses, evening provision and apprenticeship opportunities will be available and facilities will include teaching rooms, specialised workshops, and IT suites.
