The Exterminator 10K race will take place on Sunday 9th May at 11am. The start and finish point is at South Devon College’s main campus, Vantage Point, Long Road, Paignton. The race takes runners into the beautiful South Hams countryside along little known bridle paths and farm tracks, right down to the Mill Pond at Stoke Gabriel. With much of the route covering an Area of Oustanding Natural beauty, the course has been described as ‘one of the most scenic 10ks in the South West’.
This race is organised by South Devon College in association with South Devon Athletic Club. It offers a real life learning experience for sports and public services students who will all have roles to play on the day, whether it’s marshaling, time keeping or being part of the race day communications team. The race also raises funds to support the work of the Friends of South Devon College.
Kitsons Solicitors are the headline sponsors. James Cross, Joint Managing Partner, stated:
“The Exterminator is an important fundraiser for the Friends of South Devon College and Kitsons is delighted to headline sponsor such a community-based event. It offers weekend fun for families, and serious runners the opportunity to enjoy a well organised race in beautiful South Devon whilst also raising money for an educational establishment that benefits so many people across the South West. We were delighted to see that last years’ efforts enabled the college to support students through sports academies where the college's tennis players & footballers collected gold, silver & bronze in the annual British Colleges Sport national event at Loughborough University. Here’s to a successful Exterminator 2010!”
Race Director, Helen Honnor, New Developments Manager, South Devon College hopes for an even bigger turn out this year.
“We had a good size field for a first race last year despite appalling weather conditions. Runners told us they loved the route and that they would be back. The Exterminator is ideally timed as a training run for anyone doing the Plymouth half marathon and in view of the cancelled Torbay half marathon this year we also encourage anyone who would normally run the Torbay Half for charity to consider The Exterminator instead. Entrants are welcome to run, jog or walk the route. It is hoped that the stunning route will inspire people who don’t think they can run to have a go and as such we have posted an eight week training programme on our website www.southdevon.ac.uk/exterminator which is suitable for complete beginners. It takes you from zero to 10k in just two months.
We also invite primary schools to partner up with us and use the fun run as a fundraising event for their school. Those that commit to raise sponsorship to benefit their schools and the Friends of South Devon College will gain free entry. We can offer this for up to six primary schools.”
Background
The inaugural race took place on 17th May 2009. The race is named in honour of a 6 foot fully functioning replica Dalek which was designed by engineering students at the College. The route encounters a couple of challenging hills and a fair bit of mud, but there are significant downhill and flat stretches and stunning views and scenery.
All proceeds from the events will go to the Friends of South Devon College which is a registered charity established to advance the education of students attending South Devon College by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities; and to advance the education, social welfare and leisure opportunities for students and the local community. Unfortunately, the multi terrain nature of the event makes is unsuitable for wheelchair users.
