Learner Support Fund

If you are under 19 on the 31st August 2010 then you will not need to pay the tuition or exam fees on your course. This may be different if you wish to undertake a part time course, as it may be listed as “full cost” – this means that all learners are required to pay. If this is the case, please contact the Helpzone for more information.

Travel Assistance

If you are between 16-19 years of age you may be entitled to free or discounted travel. There are a range of schemes available depending on where you live; you will need to contact your local council for more information: Torbay Transport Office - t.01803 208240

Devon County Council   - t.01392 383570

You can also print off the Torbay Council Transport Form, (if you live in Torquay, Paignton or Brixham), or the Devon County Council Transport Form, (if you live anywhere else in the region), off the Helpzone page of our website. Fill it in and send it to the address mentioned on the form. They will then send you any details of how they may be able to help as soon as it becomes available.

Childcare Support - Care to Learn

If you are under 20 at the start of your chosen course and want to start or return to learning, Care to Learn may be able to pay for your childcare and associated travel costs. Care to Learn will be able to pay for childcare costs while you learn, a deposit or registration fee (up to £250) if one is charged, childcare fees you must pay during holidays in order to retain your child’s place, and necessary travel expenses to and from your child carer. There are no set or minimum number of hours. You can choose to complete a part time or full time course.

Claiming Care to Learn will not affect your own or your families' benefits or allowances. You do not have to be on benefits in order to have your childcare paid for.

Learner Support Fund

Learner Support Funds are available to assist students who may have difficulties in completing their course because of financial considerations. Learner Support Funds can contribute towards any of the costs associated with your studies, such as course books, course materials and visits.

Your application to the fund will be means tested and proof of household income will be required.

The upper household income level for support is currently set at £20,817pa gross. This is in line with the threshold for full EMA support. CITB students and Modern Apprentices are not eligible for Learner Support Funds.
