English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Classes for speakers of other languages are offered at Vantage Point, South Devon College’s main site, on a variety of dates and times. These are structured to fit in with local work patterns and ensure that they are also accessible to migrant workers employed in the leisure and tourism industry, one of the main employers in the Torbay area.

The courses are twenty or sixty hours, delivered at appropriate levels, from Entry Level 1 up to Level 2 and culminating in a national City & Guilds qualification. Although ESOL classes are no longer free to all learners, the college has a comprehensive process for allocating the Learners Support Fund, a part of which has been set aside to assist ESOL learners.

ESOL courses are also offered to individual employers, tailored to the needs of their employees. These sessions can be offsite at an employer’s own premises and at a time and duration to fit in with shift patterns.

We also offer an English @ Work in partnership with Productive Skills for Devon. This course is free to any employer who has a group of workers who need to develop their English skills.  The course covers health & safety, communication skills and work-related vocabulary tailored to the particular employment area.

These learners would receive a PSfD Certificate on completion of the course.

ESOL is also offered through ACL.
